How Shipping is Calculated at Cohart

Cohart offers flat rate shipping on all sales made via Cohart, or sellers can set their own base for shipping calculation.

Cohart Flat Rate Shipping

We charge a percentage of the order subtotal (after discounts) and tax to cover shipping and handling costs, with a minimum fee to ensure the artwork arrives safely to its new home.

Shipping Fee is calculated automatically at checkout based on the artwork dimensions and shipping requirements provided by the seller, plus tax. Tax is calculated based on the order subtotal after discounts.

Domestic Shipping

  • Standard fee: 5% of order subtotal (after discounts) and tax (minimum $5)
  • Oversized handling fee (when applicable): Additional 10%

International Shipping

  • Standard fee: 8% of order subtotal (after discounts) and tax (minimum $5)
  • Oversized handling fee (when applicable): Additional 15%

Example:

  • If order subtotal and tax is $80, domestic shipping would be $5 (as 5% would be $4, below minimum)
  • If order subtotal and tax is $200, domestic shipping would be $10 (5% of price)

What qualifies as oversized?

For shipping purposes, we consider an artwork oversized if:

  • It requires box shipping AND
  • Any dimension exceeds 29 inches (74 cm)

Once we receive payment from the buyer, we'll generate the shipping label and work closely with the seller to ensure proper packaging and safe delivery. As always, we act as the customer service liaison, providing sellers and buyers with comprehensive shipping support and tracking updates every step of the way.

Seller's Custom Shipping Base

Cohart also provides sellers with the ability to set a custom shipping base for invoice orders, which will be used to calculate the shipping fee (instead of the original subtotal and tax), allowing sellers to override the our default flat-rate shipping calculation.

Example:

  • If the original subtotal is $1,000, the system-calculated shipping fee would be $50 (domestic) or $80 (international)
  • The seller can set a custom subtotal of $100, making the shipping fee $5 (domestic) or $8 (international)
  • The total will be
    • = original subtotal + shipping fee (custom subtotal * 5% or 8%)
    • = $1,000 + $5 OR $1,000 + $8
    • = $1,005 OR $1,008

This allows sellers to customize shipping costs based on specific factors, such as order size, delivery location, or any special shipping needs, offering more control over the pricing.

By customizing the costs, sellers can ensure that shipping charges accurately reflect the actual cost of fulfillment, rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all rate. This flexibility helps sellers avoid undercharging or overcharging and ensures that the shipping process is better aligned with each individual order. It also allows for more transparent pricing, which can improve communication with buyers and help manage expectations around shipping costs.
